Fiber connected homes
The cost for fiber to the home (FTTH) deployment continues to be a barrier for most “last mile” service providers. Why? Mostly due to wrong network architecture, along with non-standard active equipment, but one other major factor is network deployment which is connected to labor cost and accounting for as much as half of the total project, where the labor cost is something that is increasing all over the world.

As operators increasingly focus on deploying FTTH across their networks, they are looking at how they can minimize deployment costs, and want to create a model that can increase their return on investment. In the same time they have the pressure to deploy FTTH quickly and cost-effectively, while still ensuring a high quality, reliable installation that causes minimal disruption to customers and the local area.

The aim with article is to highlight our intensive research and model from major operators globally, on how carriers are trying to improve the network ROI and reinvent the fiber to the home business model to help reduce the build-up costs. When deploying a fiber network, one of the key factors used to calculate ROI is how long it will operate. After all, some copper networks have lasted over 100 years , even if they can’t necessarily meet today’s high-speed broadband needs in their current form

From the active side the GPON equipment today is in advanced stage, where maintenance has become much easier with enhanced features supporting remote management capability, along with next generation Artificial intelligence (AI) modulators which GX are developing. With this the FTTH products are moving into self managed network, the only manual intervention would be hardware replacement which will also be automated with our new upcoming Business Intelligent (BI) analytics platform, sending the right spare part to right site maintenance team without a single human intervention or decision.

Installation in India

 

Modern fiber has excellent performance with low well-controlled loss with a life time of 30-40 years, but that is based on proper installations. Today we have over 80% of FTTH rollouts relying on aerial fiber deployments in some form, and aerial cables are impacted by the conditions of the environment they are in. Seasonal temperature variations, wind, sun heat can cause the cable to expand and contract, applying variable forces on the fibers which reduces the life time, we have taken many references from Local Cable Operators (LCOs) where we have noticed projects with 6-7 years fiber life time, and for this networks created a solutions where ROI is achievable implementation a LCO model.

 

What is the right way to expand FTTH deployment?

We have designed models and FTTH products supporting the different aspects on real-life scenarios, taking in consideration of worst case condition working with Local Cable Operators (LCOs) all over India, where cables are aerial installed on Poles/Trees, hanging over buildings and the active equipment installed in a non-ac room managed by a non technical experienced person, but also evaluated the most clean installations done, where high level technical engineer are used and entire environment is as per requirements. Taking this both experiences together we have created a complete new way of working with FTTH, ensuring its possible to reduce labor cost, and improving the efficiency in deployments with aerial cabling done, in order to make use of the existing infrastructure.

The research is today used by operators and based on global operators, supporting emerging markets with ensuring their network growth with guidelines and right equipment, resulting in a more financial viable investment
